Abhyanga, the practice of self-massage with warm oil prior to a bath is not recommended in pregnancy, especially during the first trimester. This is because abhyanga is a firm, strong, and flowing massage technique.

However, during the second and third trimesters, gentle and soothing massage application proves to beneficial for mother as well as the baby. Regular self-massage soaks through the seven dhatus of the body and helps in healthy growth of the baby.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to massaging yourself gently during pregnancy:

  • To begin with think of sneha, the love. Offer love and care to yourself and your baby.

  • Warm half a cup of Ayurvedic herbal oil for 5 minutes.

  • Undress fully. Begin softly massaging the oil to the crown of the head and the face. Then work your way down to the breast, the nipples, and the abdomen.

  • Use long, up and down strokes on the long bones of the legs and arms. On your joints (elbows, shoulders, and knees) move your palms in a circular pattern.

  • While applying oil on the belly, move your palm gently in a wider circular pattern.

  • Allow a minimum of 10 minutes for the oil to soak in as you’re not vigorously massaging the muscles during pregnancy

  • Post massage, enjoy a nice, warm bath, rinse off the excess oil.

  • After the bath, pat yourself dry yourself with a soft cloth. Refrain from using any moisturizer if possible. The massage helps the body maintain its moisture level, so you won’t need anything extra.

The practice of self-massage gives relief from itchiness, dryness, skin discolouration, stretch marks, and the anxiety and stress that women often experience during pregnancy.
